"Stop Stretching!" - Why These Fitness & Health Professionals are Wrong.

Recently, the buzz phrase around the fitness cyberspace has been, "Stop Stretching!" Suddenly, stretching seems to have been branded as an archaic practice. But before we jump on the bandwagon, let's examine how much truth these claims hold.

Understanding the Tool: Stretching

Let's set the record straight: any tool, stretching included, isn't innately good or bad. Its effectiveness depends on its application.

Now let’s start off with clearing up two of the most common myths I hear and see online.

Debunking Stretching Myths

Now let's break down two popular myths about static stretching (holding a stretch for a set duration):

1. The Decrease in Power: Critics argue that stretching can be detrimental, pointing to studies that show static stretching before a workout reduces power output. Here's the context they miss: the decrease in power only occurs when you stretch for an extended period (60 seconds or more) and immediately perform an exercise, a sequence most people don't follow. After a proper dynamic warm-up and warm-up sets, the initial power loss is mitigated.
2. The Strength Over Stretch Paradigm: Some fitness gurus proclaim, "Stop stretching, start strengthening!" When I began my journey as a trainer, I understood that some people might need more strength training than stretching. However, making it binary — 'this' over 'that' — sends a wrong message. Both stretching and strengthening have their place and benefits, and it's not a zero-sum game.

Stretching – The Misunderstood Hero

Let's demystify some misunderstandings about stretching:

1. The Half-Truth: Stretching is as personal as your playlist. Blanket "stop stretching" advice is overly generic and misses the mark. Every 'body' is unique, with distinct needs and requirements.
2. The Over-Simplicity: Our bodies are complex and unique. Propagating a one-size-fits-all rule for stretching is too naive and simplistic.
3. The Fear Factor: 'Stop stretching' videos can create unnecessary confusion and fear. The truth is, when done right, stretching can be a boon, not a bane.
4. The Lost Focus: The fitness discourse should be promoting holistic healthy habits, rather than dismissing certain practices. 

The Fitness Metaphor

Think of the variety of fitness activities as different speeds of movement (walking → sprinting):

1. Stretching: Comparable to walking. Beneficial when done consistently, but won't drastically transform your physique overnight. Perfect for promoting flexibility and range of motion.
2. Mobility Exercises: These are like jogging. Similar to stretching but performed with repetitions, they improve joint flexibility and mobility.
3. Strength and Stability Exercises: Comparable to running. More intense than mobility exercises, they enhance muscle strength and stability.
4. Power and Explosive Exercises: These represent sprinting. High-intensity, explosive movements that focus on building power and speed.

Saying "stop stretching" is as absurd as suggesting "stop walking, and only run." Each form of exercise, like each pace of movement, has its unique benefits and place in a holistic fitness routine. It's not an either-or situation - balance is key.

Suggesting that everyone should stop stretching oversimplifies our understanding of fitness. When done correctly, and for the right reasons, stretching can be a valuable component of your fitness regimen. Just as our bodies differ, so too should our approach to maintaining and improving our physical health.
